One of the most popular destinations for visitors to the Kitsap Peninsula is just a short 35-minute ferry boat ride from downtown Seattle, Bainbridge Island. It's also one of the most desirable residential communities in the Pacific Northwest. In July 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine named Bainbridge Island WA the second-best place to live in the entire United States!
In the late 1700's, Royal Navy Officer and Explorer, George Vancouver, spent several days with his ship HMS Discovery anchored off Restoration Point (which is now Country Club) near the southern end of Bainbridge Island while his men surveyed other parts of Puget Sound. Vancouver also spent time exploring Rich Passage, Port Orchard, and Sinclair Inlet. He failed to find Agate Passage and as a result, his maps erroneously showed Bainbridge Island as a peninsula.
In 1841, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, under commission by the US Govt. surveyed the Pacific Northwest, and spent much time in the Puget Sound area. Lt. Wilkes named the island after Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the frigate U.S.S. Constitution in the War of 1812.
As with many towns in Kitsap County WA history, Bainbridge Island was originally a center for the logging and shipbuilding industries. The island was known for huge and easily accessible cedars, which were especially in demand for ships' masts. The original county seat of Kitsap County was at Port Madison on the north end of the island, but was later transferred to Port Orchard.
